A young man has died after a Range Rover crashed into a phone mast in Gorton.
Emergency services were scrambled to the scene of the crash on Hyde Road - near the junction with Debdale Lane - at around 2.50am this morning (Tuesday). A blue Range Rover smashed into a mast, police said.
The front seat passenger - a 23-year-old man - was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. His family are being supported by specialist officers.
The driver of the car - a man - was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. A second passenger suffered minor injuries, officers added.
Both men remain in hospital this morning. Police said enquiries suggest that a grey Audi A3 may have been involved in the crash.
A 23-year-old woman - the driver of the Audi - has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She remains in custody to be quizzed by detectives.
Hyde Road remains closed off this morning with a cordon in place. Pictures taken in the early hours showed a huge emergency services response at the scene, with a fire service tent surrounding the crash.
Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. They want to speak to anyone who saw the two cars driving in Gorton, or who has dash cam footage.
Sergeant Andrew Page, of our SCIU, said: "My thoughts are with all those affected by this devastating incident – particularly the family of the man who sadly lost his life, and we are doing all we can to support them at this awful time.
