It looked for all the world that - after winning another Premier League title - Manchester City would be content with a fairly quiet summer. One big splurge on the player they've coveted for several years would be enough, we thought.
Going into the summer the only position City really needed to strengthen this year was to recruit a striker, and by pulling off the signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, they've got a player who could well become the best in the world.
City are already the dominant force in English football at present, having won four of the last five Premier League titles, and adding Haaland to an already sensational squad seems akin to deploying a cheat code. But it isn't over yet.

City have agreed a fee for Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who looks like being an ideal replacement for the departing Fernandinho. And don't forget that Argentinian striking sensation Julian Alvarez, who's been making big waves for River Plate, will arrive for pre-season training in Manchester as he makes a bid to be part of Pep Guardiola's first-team plans.
But the other hand, City look set to see more departures than perhaps they might have planned for this summer. On top of Fernandinho's planned moved back to Brazil, Gabriel Jesus is on the verge of a move to Arsenal, while Chelsea are making a big move to lure Raheem Sterling back to his home city of London.
There are also a number of more fringe players who - with two months still to run of the transfer window - may feel that their City futures are uncertain. There's a long way to go yet.
