Helen Peters, whose name has been changed to conceal her identity, has described the experience as a 'nightmare' as she spent a year waiting for HMRC to realise it's a mistake and reclaim the money.
The self-employed mother found that a £774,839.39 payment from HMRC had been sent into her account out of nowhere.

“It was like something out of a Hollywood film, and after I had got over the shock I just assumed that someone would realise that they had made a huge mistake and that they would swiftly take the money back," Peters said.
