Although I know many people who enjoy a supermarket café drop in post-weekly shop or in passing, I’ve never been one of those people. I think I had a hot chocolate in a Sainsbury’s café once, while waiting for my mum to pay, but that’s as far as my dining experiences have gone at the supermarket - beyond sampling M&S’s Colin the Caterpillar frappe.
I’ve heard mixed views on the food served at supermarket cafés, with some saying it’s cheap and cheerful, others claiming it’s cheap and nasty. And really, there was only one way to settle that debate - by going and seeing for myself.
I headed out on a mission to discover which supermarket had the best pitstop fry up, tasting offerings from Morrisons, Asda and Tesco, and was stunned to find just one - and maybe a half - runny egg yolk between them.

Not only that, but the components of a breakfast differ vastly depending on where you go and what time you eat it, and some won’t have half the ingredients in to make one anyway. Having eaten three supermarket fry ups over the course of a week, it's safe to say that I probably won’t be doing it again any time soon - but one did stand head and shoulders above the others in terms of quality and experience.
